Study in Europe Without IELTS: Real Options for Pakistani Students

Yes, many European universities accept students without IELTS. Here is how it works: the alternative English tests, the English medium of instruction letter, and the catch most agents don't mention.

Can you really study in Europe without IELTS?

Yes. IELTS is the best-known English test, but it is not the only way to prove your English. Many universities in Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Italy and other European countries accept alternatives, and some accept proof that your previous degree was taught in English.

What matters is that the university is satisfied with your English, and that the immigration authority accepts the same evidence. Those are two different checks, and the second one is where students get caught out.

Option 1: English medium of instruction (MOI) letter

An MOI letter is an official letter from your previous school, college or university confirming that your programme was taught in English. Many Pakistani universities teach in English, and a number of European universities accept an MOI letter instead of a test score.

The letter should be on official letterhead, signed and stamped, and should name your programme and the years you studied. Some universities only accept it for a master's (based on a bachelor's taught in English), not for a bachelor's.

Option 2: Other English tests

If a university does not accept an MOI letter, it may accept a different test that is quicker or cheaper to take:

  • Duolingo English Test, taken online from home
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT
  • Cambridge English qualifications
  • The university's own online English test or interview

Option 3: A university English interview

Some universities assess your English in an online interview with the admissions team. It is usually a short conversation about your background, your choice of programme and your plans. Prepare for it like a real interview: speak clearly, give specific answers and know why you chose that course.

The catch: the visa officer may ask too

Even if the university admits you without IELTS, the embassy or migration authority may still look at your English during the visa process, especially if your interview or documents raise doubts. A student who cannot communicate in English during a visa interview will struggle, whatever the admission letter says.

So the honest advice is: use an IELTS waiver if you qualify, but make sure your English is genuinely strong enough to study, and to explain your plans in an interview.

Which countries are most flexible?

Flexibility depends more on the individual university than on the country. Generally, universities in Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Hungary and Malta are among the most open to MOI letters and alternative tests, while highly competitive programmes, and many universities in Germany and the Netherlands, more often insist on a formal test score.

Requirements change every admission cycle, so always check the current English requirement for the specific programme.
